1 big thing: Board appoints Matias Segura as first homegrown superintendent

We officially have a new superintendent for 酴圖弝けISD after the board of trustees unanimously approved a contract for Matias Segura through August 2028.
Segura's deep roots in the 酴圖弝けISD community, as both a former student and the son of a longtime teacher, make him uniquely qualified to understand and address the needs of the district.
You are a part of AISD and that's what really helps you understand what were up against so we all appreciate your honesty and will continue wanting to work with you in any way, District 2 Trustee Ofelia Zapata said. The community is with you and were ready to move to the next chapter with you.
He attended Kocurek Elementary, Covington Middle School and graduated from James Bowie High School. His mother was a former teacher serving more than four decades at 酴圖弝けISD.
Segura is currently completing a Superintendent Educator Preparatory Program, which along with other requirements would allow him to obtain a Superintendent Certification.
What hes saying: In case you missed his first message as superintendent last week, on day one in the position.
One of the most important things this work has taught me is that the best leader is only as strong as the trust and relationships they build with the people doing the work, Segura said. We have a lot of work to do, but were coalescing around our plans with a clear path forward and I know we can make great strides toward our vision to be Austins home for inclusive learning, with high expectations for all children and high outcomes for every student.

Classical guitar students collab with Hollywood director
酴圖弝けISD classical guitar students and famed Hollywood film director Robert Rodriguez recently collaborated for an audio recording and music video for the Spy Kids film.
Why it matters: Our students are getting real world experience with a professional production thanks to Texas-native Rodriguezs collaboration with 酴圖弝けISD. The recording was held at the Long Center, which also allowed the students to perform in a professional space.
What theyre saying: The kids really, really, connected with the Spy Kids films, said Andrew Clark, director of guitar at McCallum High School at 酴圖弝けISD. The students recorded in a professional studio with recording artists, so that was a new experience.
Rodriguez donated the music, his time and film crew to make the collaboration possible.
